Lauren and I arrived at my house on Monday evening around 10:45pm, we were super tired and went to bed shortly after arriving. At around 7:30am the next morning we awake to a pretty horrible sound. She looks at me and says "is that the alarm?" (It kinda sounded like when you have your radio in between stations and you hear mostly static noise). I picked up the alarm and grouchily said "no!" (hey, I was tired what can i say?). So a few minutes later its still going on and she says "that doesn't sound good." I got up and went downstairs, the closer I got to the back of the house the louder it got, I opened my back door and went outside into my yard, I look up and see the power line sparking and essentially on fire!! I run back in the house and tell Lauren what I saw and said "should I call 911?!!" to which she replies "YES!!!" I call and the phone rings...and rings...and rings...FINALLY someone answers, I tell them "I just moved here last night, I don't even know what street I'm looking at but there is a power line on fire!!!" (sidenote: of course I know what my address is but this was the next street over as it was behind my house...sorry, just felt the need to clarify :)). The lady calmly says "let me connect you to fire." The phone rings and rings.....and rings (at this point I'm loosing all hope in the emergency/rescue dep't and hoping I'm never being chased by a rapist in a dark alley w/ how quickly they are responding!!). Anyway, a man answers, I quickly tell him whats going on and he says "are you on 23rd street?" to which I reply "I don't know, I just moved here last night!!!" He then says , "yeah, we're on it." Right as I hang up the phone I see a man in uniform walk right by me (so I felt pretty silly for calling). I then peek outside my fence and see the firetruck. Um hello! And whew! I was literally standing there thinking "is my house going to burn down before my very eyes after I've literally spent less than 10 hours in it?!!" Unreal. Welcome to Waco!
(I realize this doesn't look like much but at some points it was letting off a LARGE flame, and the sound was dreadful!)

why, hello there fire truck!

Texas is throwing you a sizzling welcome!
Lets home your other welcomes are more welcome than this... You never know what your going to find in this place...
I'm so thankful no one was hurt, no damage done to property....HOW SCARY!!! I've heard things are a little slower paced in the south, but response time for emergencies should not be one of them:)
Can't wait for the next story....
Love,
Mom

Did you ever find out what caused it?
That was CRAZY scary!! Luckily, it was only scary for about 7 1/2 minutes. Then it was just weird that none of the firemen were doing anything!! It was so anticlimactic when the guy from the power company finally showed up and just casually walked over to the box under the power line and flipped a switch.
I'm so glad your house didn't burn down :) I really though it might for a minute there!!!!
This actually happened in my hood too. Although I knew what street it was because I have lived here for about 5 years and I actually saw it when I drove by it. A tree limb touched the line and caught fire - no crazy sound though hmmmm. Anyway, I called the fire dept., but as I was calling through my cell service dropped the call. So, I had to drive down the hill to call back. Then I drove back up the hill and sat in my car, on the street and waited for the fire department to arrive. I was watching the fire just encase it spread. Like I was going to do something if it did - yeah right. Anyway, by the time they arrived, the limb had just burned away and the little bit that remained was in the street charred. It was so small that I literally had to get out of my car and point to it in the street - kind of felt like a moron by then. The fire guy told me that the wires are live and that this will happen if a tree touches it. He made it sound like it happens all the time and it is no big deal. No big deal until the whole hood burns down from it, I mean I live in fire country ... H E L L O?
