the story of "the" lunchbox

Moving is hard on everyone, but I think kids have an especially tough time. Kids like their routine and things that they know, starting over can be really daunting, especially to my little one who likes things how she likes things (hmm...wonder where she gets that from?). Anyway, before we left Oregon I was trying to get B all excited about our big move to Texas and I was telling her how she would be going to a new school, and school would be longer this year and she would get to bring her lunch! I explained that this news was exciting because she would get to pick out a lunchbox for the first time! Who hoo right?! Well, anyway, my daughter being very particular '(again, wonder where she gets that?) responds with "I want it to have butterflies on it and polka dots." With this information I think "hmm...that could be hard to come by, if such a thing even exists!" Fast forward a month or so, we are in Toys R' Us looking for a birthday gift for a friend and it hits me that school is starting next week and I forgot to buy B a lunchbox! Gah! I realize I may forget to get her one if I don't do it now because I have a lot on my mind (hey, I'm not the worst mom ever, we had just moved!). So, anyway, we walk in and see some lunchboxes, of course the selection was sparse as school was just starting and I say to B "you can pick out a lunchbox!" She responds with "I want it to have butterflies with polka dots." (side note: seriously, what 3 year old remembers such detail a month later?!). I'm realizing this isn't going to happen, especially at Toys R' Us but B is obsessed with all things princess and I see that there is ONE princess lunchbox left and of course she makes a beeline for it and says "I want this one!" Well, thats cool right? I mean, she found one she likes, she didn't say anything about the fact that it didn't have butterflies nor polka dots, and it was only $7.99 so its kinda a win win situation right? Only, truth be told, I really didn't want her to have a cloth lunchbox, I could see it getting all nasty and dirty with time, and it just wasn't the old school metal lunchbox I had in mind for her. I figured it would do in the short term but I'd keep my eyes peeled for the "real deal."
Fast forward another week or so, (I know, I realize this story about a lunch box is getting long, hang in there with me) I'm on a website that has home decor items, kids stuff, etc. and this "back to school" line pops up and I see cute things so I click on it. All of a sudden...there it is, the lunchbox!!! It has a butterfly in the middle of it with polka dots in the background -SCORE ONE FOR MOMMY!!! I am hearing angels singing in the background as I picture B telling me I'm the best mommy in the world and I'm feeling like I all of a sudden deserve a big ol' pat on the back. This moment of glory last all of 2 seconds when I excitedly say to B "B, come here!!! Look what mommy found, its just what you wanted!!!!!!!!" She looks at the screen, sees "the" lunchbox, and then glances at the others in the background and says (in a very unenthusiastic tone) "I don't want that one, I want that one" and points to one with a boring old flower on it. I gasp and say "no, no, you don't!! you want this one, its JUST what you've been telling me for months, this is the one!!!" To which she says the same thing, "no, I want that one." Big deflated sigh. We go back and forth like this for quite a while, Adam is in the background shaking his head at me and then he says "let her get the one she wants." (I think its fair to say, he just didn't get it!) Sigh. Any mom out there can appreciate this story, right?! COME ON, I found the lunchbox!! Anyway, I resign myself to the fact that it is her lunchbox and although I found it, "it" is not what she ended up wanting, FINE. So, I proceed to check out to enter my credit card number and then, I see it...$40.00!! Whatthe???????? Is it made out of sterling silver?! $40.00 for a lunchbox?! It was clearly too late at this point to abandon said lunchbox but truth be told, I'm still thinking how ridiculous that is. For the record, no, I do not condone spending $40.00 on a 3 year old's lunchbox, however, if it had been the lunchbox, it would have been easier to swallow, for me at least. Happy Tuesday! xo

one cool thing I didn't know about this ridiculously over priced lunchbox, it comes with a chalkboard inside so I can write notes to my sweet pea, this helps me mentally just a tad.

ok, seriously had this same conversation with my K about her lunchbox/backpack...SO good to know that same exchange isn't just happening over here. (Especially the part about Justin grumbling "just let her get what she wants" they certainly don't understand!)

LOVE that precious lunchbox - that chalkboard on the inside is TO-DIE-FOR!

LOVE the chalkboard inside--I would pay $40 for a lunchbox with that inside (just don't tell my husband)

It's beautiful ... even if it isn't "the" one. Was she excited when it arrived or did she pull what our kids do and give an unenthusiastic, 'ya, it's ok...'??

Hi Molly: B done good. U done good. A done good. Just use the same lunch box for a couple of years to amortize its cost, and all will be good!

Well, it is a really cute lunchbox what with the chalkboard and all, even if it's not THE one and it's $40!
