summer summer summertime (read this like Will Smith sings it)

014x

Summer has been in full swing around here for a while now but we're officially starting our summer "vacation" tomorrow! This photo is pretty much what the view has been in B's bathroom for a month, and with no end in sight! I'm ready for (more) lazy days of lounging in pools, visiting with friends and family, and kicking back. The ol' blog will be quiet for a bit as we will be doing LOTS of driving and settling into vacation mode. I will be working pretty much the whole time we're gone so I'd say maybe check back in in another week or so for some more happenings. For now, we're signing off! Enjoy your summer, all! xo

behind the scenes

Brennan hates to be left out of anything that Adam and I are doing, she prefers to be in the center at all times. The other day I asked her to move out of the way of my frame while I took the photo of Adam and I (on our anniversary post). She of course wasn't thrilled with my request so this is what was going on behind the scenes:

anniversary day re-cap

Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee, and get ready for story time.

Friday, June 24, 2011 was Adam's and my 11 year wedding anniversary, it was going to be a pretty chill celebration but we hired a baby sitter and were going to eat something yummy for dinner and maybe hit up a movie. Well, that morning Adam decided to take our car in to get the oil changed (he was leaving soon for a work trip and the day after he gets back we start our journey cross country). He brings the car home, I then get in the car to run some errands before picking up B from art camp. As soon as I get in the car I notice that the check oil light is on, obviously I think this is weird since it wasn't even on before Adam took the car in to get the oil changed, and since the car was just serviced it shouldn't be on now. I called Adam to ask if he noticed the light was on, he said no and we agreed to take the car back into the service station once we picked up B. Well, on our way to get B the car started really acting weird, not accelerating well, making weird noises, etc... We get Brennan into the car and start to head to the service station when all of a sudden, no power when I push the gas pedal, the check engine light comes on, the power steering goes out, the battery light comes on and the car essentially dies. Lovely. I used all my might to turn the wheel as the car was dying and managed to pull off the road and park in front of a house on a not-so-nice street. So, there we all sit, in a 100+degree car, awe.some. We call a couple friends before getting ahold of one who said he could be there in about 15 minutes (thanks Toph!). Since it was B's last day of art camp our car was filled with her art projects for the week, so there we are, putting her carseat and all of her art stuff into Toph's car for our drive home. Adam is on the phone w/ the service station, etc.. they agree to have the car towed to a dealership and to get it looked at. From our own little investigation, reading online, talking to others, what it appears happened was that they forgot to put the oil back IN the car once they took it out and in doing so, our engine is now ruined. AWE.SOME. There are a couple problems here other than the obvious, Adam goes to Kentucky on Sunday for work and won't be back until Wednesday, we leave on Thursday to start our cross country trek and we have a pretty strict schedule we have to stick to in order to get to where we NEED to be on time. Even IF these folks agree to take responsibility for what they did to the car and fix it in time, I'm not super stoked to drive that car across the country a day later (right?!!). So, after very little deliberation (due to time restraints) we decide to go get a new car.

_________insert break in story to get back to actual anniversary_________

So, once Toph brings us back to our house and drops us off, Adam remains on the phone for a while talking to the service station folks, figuring out the towing situation, going back to the car to wait for the tow people, etc.. In the midst of the crazy I loose track of time and feel very deflated and am thinking I'm in no place for anniversary celebrating. Adam and I look at each other and suggest maybe just staying home? I look down at my watch and realize the baby sitter will be at our house in 20 minutes and there isn't time to cancel even if I want to!! I quickly run and throw on some make up and a dress and by the time I get downstairs she's here! Whew! Adam and I kiss B goodbye and decide to head out and try to enjoy whatever is left of the night. Since the only car we now have has no a/c we have the windows rolled down and are sweating like pigs (reminiscing about the drive we took to Waco the week we met, also in a car w/ no a/c) and how we are really having a full circle moment. We have a tasty dinner, then head to the movies. Adam got mixed up as to what movie was playing at what time and what theater so needless to say, we ended up seeing a movie that was starting when we got there (which by the way, was the second theater we went to). Ohmyword, this movie (Midnight in Paris) was SO BORING I thought about just closing my eyes to take a nap and forget the day! I chose to lean over to Adam and suggest we leave, and head back to the first theater we went to and see another movie (by this time we were close to another movie starting which we had noticed when we went to this theater the first time). So, back to another theater and we watch a different movie. AY YI YI. Several times throughout this whole debacle of a day Adam and I would look at each other and say "Happy Anniversary!!" It was one for the record books that's for sure!

___________________back to car story______________________

So on Saturday Adam and I are discussing our options and we decide that it makes the most sense to just go buy a new car (just to be clear, we were already going to get a new car, we just weren't planning on doing it until late August or early September, so this wasn't an out -of -the- blue decision). I have bought/leased a handful of cars in my life, and buying a car is not my favorite thing to do (I have yet to meet a car dealer who isn't a total schmuck (I'm sure there are some out there, I just haven't met one yet), one guy literally said to me yesterday that if I didn't buy the car from him I couldn't get one anywhere else, there just weren't any out there!). Our friends graciously offered to take B and Adam and I headed out with very little preparation and/or planning to buy a car (not an ideal way to do it, and I wouldn't recommend it). Oh, and it must be said, the car we traded in was my VERY FIRST car that my dad bought me 13 years ago!! I swear that thing would have gone forever!! (The a/c recently went out in it and so we drove all over HOT Texas with NO AIR CONDITIONING!!). There was a little part of me that was sad to say goodbye to the ol' honda but the no a/c thing made it less painful. After going to 3 car dealerships we ended up getting a new car and walking away feeling pretty good about it all. So that was our anniversary/weekend and now my hubby is gone for a few days (sniff) but we're about to start our journey WITH a/c and hopefully no car trouble!! Happy Monday everyone, hope its better than my Friday! xo

June 23, 2011

lets see...

This week has been very similar to last week, swimming at our friend's pool, lazy days, B going to art camp, having dinner with friends, etc... Pretty chill, but also fun and relaxing. For dinner a couple nights ago I tried this Italian dish, to be honest, it was just okay, kinda bland so I don't think its a repeater.

I have a confession, I've been holding out on you. I know, I know, its criminal, but I'm about to make things right. I often buy bananas and they go bad before they are all eaten, I hate throwing out food so I often make banana bread, and to mix it up every once in a while I add chocolate chips (I know, I know, I'm a big risk taker!!). While this is all fine and well, I get tired of banana bread and the other day I wanted to mix it up and try something different with my rotting bananas. I googled some recipes and this is what I came up with. OH.MY.GOSH. this stuff is UNREAL! I literally can't stay out of it!! I had to take some to some friends just to get it out of my house!! Adam told me he doesn't know why I would ever make banana bread again if I could just make this instead! I agree!! So, anyhow, if you like bananas, and chocolate chips, and coffee cake, give it a whirl, you will.not. be disappointed (and if you are, well, I'm not sure we can be friends so maybe don't tell me).

In other news, the Winn's departure date for the summer is quickly approaching! If you want a photo session will me, there are still spots available in Portland, OR and San Francisco, CA so shoot me an email and I will do my best to make it happen! We just found out we will be in Montana for several days as well so if any readers happen to be around Bigfork, let me know! :)

What else....??? Oh, in keeping w/ sharing the ol' weight loss, I'm down 7lbs, 15 more to go. I haven't been super hard core since being on staycation and all, but the scale is still moving downward so that's good!

I think that's about all, sorry, not much exciting to share around here! As always, thanks for checking in!! xo

Winn Family Staycation Review

This week we have:

*taken B to vbs every day
*Adam and I have gone to coffee or run errands, just the two of us
*eaten lunch as a family at: Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, McDonalds, Jimmy Johns and today ??
*gone to our friends' house numerous times to use their pool
*had tasty yet simple dinners that require minimal time in the kitchen
*checked out a new frozen yogurt place after dinner as a special treat (just 1 night) :)
*B has watched numerous cartoons
*we may or may not have showered every day
*done lots of snuggling

Its been a great week of doing simple, fun things as a family of 3. Today is officially our last day of staycation but I have a feeling that next week won't look too different (B will go to art camp rather than vbs). :) Ahhh summer, so glad its here! Happy Friday and weekend, all! xo

June 14, 2011

this week...

....is VERY chill for the Winns. It's kinda like a staycation but without the intentionality. Brennan has vacation Bible school for 3 hours a day every day this week. I think she likes it, I told her she didn't have to go if she didn't want to but she opted to go again today so I guess that's a good sign? Adam and I went and got coffee at a local Waco hang out and sat outside this morning and had a good, long talk (love those!). Yesterday after we picked up B we all went out to lunch, I think we'll probably do that again today. :)

I've decided not to cook this week, since its kinda a staycation and I don't cook on vacation, I figured why not?! I bought frozen meals that looked tasty or that had minimal prep to them for the week. Also, its 101 degrees pretty much every day so its nice to not stand over a hot stove.

We went to the Waco Water Park the other day with some friends, that was fun! We hadn't been before so it was a neat thing to check out. Of course I got sunburned (b/c I hate sunscreen so I rarely put it on, I know, BAD Molly!) so I've been paying for that ever since and my forehead is all peely and gross, ick!

Well, I guess that's all the haps in these here parts! Hopefully we'll have more interesting things to share but I can't make any promises, summer is in full swing here which means lots of lazy days. Thanks for checking in! xo

tippy top window treatments

I realize this post may be interesting to no one other than my mom but for someone who has been flashing her neighbors and having sun pour into the third floor with no reprieve for nearly a year, this is a BIG deal! So, without further ado, here is the before and after of the tippy top windows:

Beef Bourguinon & firsts

Yesterday was a day of "firsts" for me:

#1 I attempted to buy frozen pearl onions (for the first time) at several places and apparently they don't exist in Texas (a store manager said they stopped carrying them 3 years ago -what??@!$?!)

#2 I purchased Cognac

#3 I purchased Cognac from a drive thru liquor store (who knew these existed?!!)

#4 I made beef bourguinon

#5 I "flamed" the bourguinon per the instructions (lit it on fire), apparently this burns out the alcohol of the cognac but keeps the flavor. (I was holding my breath and praying I wouldn't set my house on fire!)

Last night we fed B early and then had some friends over for a nice dinner. I wanted to try something new, something super tasty, and something a little fancier than I normally make. Ina Garten's Beef Bourguinon was the answer! I'm not gonna lie, it was delish! Here are my 2 cents: I cooked it for 2+ hours rather than an hour and 15 minutes, it made the meat more tender and I noticed on the comments of the recipe that several others did this too so I thought I'd try it. My pearl onions weren't frozen but I still think they could have cooked for another 10-15 min as they were still a little too intense after just 15 minutes. I left out the tomato paste b/c when I opened mine up, it was old and gross (it only calls for 1 tablespoon so I doubt it changes the flavor too much). All in all I'd say it was a success, and I didn't burn the house down, bonus! xo

spied & wanted

I'm adding a new "section" to the ol' blog called "spied & wanted." Essentially just things that I come across that I think are cool and that I think it would be nice to have (or just to share about). First up of this installment:

Cute note cards! I still (even with modern technology) am an avid note writer. I heart these. (I think it would be fun to get the A, B and M and have it be the Winn stationary for a long while).

Since the image wouldn't down load (grrr), you can click HERE to see the cute note cards.

Happy Tuesday! xo

Friday randomness

Happy Friday!!

Last night I made these sante fe chicken salad wraps for dinner, they were delish! Adam loved them and said I could make them every week. I used whole wheat tortillas, and I think next time I might add a bit more cumin and paprika. I also might leave out the 1 stalk of celery, I don't really like celery, I know it adds a nice crunch in a chicken salad but I think I could have done without.

In keeping with my commitment to share my weight loss, according to the scale this morning, I've officially lost 6.2lbs. 15 more lbs to go!

The tippy top window treatments are being installed today!!!

I watched my friend's 5 week old baby boy for a large chunk of the day yesterday, it was really my first experience of what it would be like to have 2 kids. Needless to say, Brennan told me (and Adam) not to have another baby. Done! (every once in a blue moon she'll say she wants a baby sister, I think yesterday sealed the deal that she really doesn't).

Yesterday the 3 of us lounged in our ghetto blow up pool, it was so nice!! When we go out around 3pm and sit in the cool water, it feels so nice! (we sucked it up and bought another pool, the one with the bite out of it just wouldn't do any more, we told B no more biting, 2 pools was enough for one month!)

We're having some friends over for dinner tonight, looking forward to that. I love summer evenings where you just lounge and chat the night away while the kiddos play.

I think that's about all the haps around here. Hope you all have a lovely weekend! xo

June 2, 2011

she wore an itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini

Yesterday was a great day! Brennan and I went to the mall to get a birthday present for a friend of mine, and I bought (in addition to the present) the cutest top! I have a hard time finding tops, so this was very exciting to me. Then we came home and lounged outside in our ghetto pool (the top layer of the pool is deflated since B bit a hole in it!), it was 99 degrees here yesterday! HOT! Then we went to our friend's house for dinner, we had never been there before and although it was only 10 minutes from our house it felt like we stepped into another world! They are tucked away and have a long driveway up to their home, such a cool vibe there! Lots of windows and porches, etc.. They made a delicious dinner and it was so nice to chat the evening away with friends. Then (as if the day wasn't already perfectly lovely) we came home to find a plate of cookies on our doorstep from our sweet friends/neighbors! Have I mentioned how much I love it here? xo
