Merry Christmas! With Love, The Winns

We've been having so much fun the past few days, I've baked a million cookies, the 3 of us built a ginger bread house, we have a friend's birthday party later today, and we're gearing up to head to the Great Wolf Lodge for Christmas! We're super excited to spend Christmas Eve/Christmas day in water slide heaven! I won't be blogging until after Christmas so have a very Merry Christmas everyone! xo

pure randomness

Tis the season for craziness, no?! Tomorrow is my last day of work for the year and I am G.I.D.D.Y. I'm looking forward to slow, lazy days and just a general feeling of being "caught up" on life. I have some house projects to work on...I still need to paint the very top of the high part of the hallway that I can't quite reach, I FINALLY (after 2.5 years of looking) ordered a light fixture for the living room! Can't wait for it to arrive/have it installed...hopefully it will be enough light for that room! My counter tops ARE STILL NOT IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My date of installation is not until JANUARY 4th!!! Unreal. Sigh. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to that. What else.....OH! Brennan's window treatments FINALLY got installed! It only took 2.5 years but all 6 windows now have their roman shades on and I LOVE how pretty it looks in her room! YAY, another project down! The house stuff is slowly but surely coming together!

This past week B won the "best drawing" for all of kindergarten! She had her photo taken and put in the school newsletter and got a prize, I was so proud. :) Today was her Christmas program at school, cutest angel I ever did see! Today was also her last day of school for the year so the Winn household is almost officially on break! Poor Adam has mounds of grading to do but he's close to wrapping it up.

I tried a new recipe for dinner tonight, it was a fair amount of work but not too bad. It was really delicious so if you have some time and like Indian food, give this basil chicken in coconut sauce a whirl!

I've been doing some baking as well, made some Field family traditional spritz cookies, and gave my mom's amaze-balls peanut brittle a whirl! I'm probably not helping my diet any but tis the season right?! (but actually, a few days ago the scale was down another pound...wonders never cease!).

Well, I think that's all the randomness I have for now. I'll leave you with instagrams of cookies and brittle. Happy day to you! xo

December 17, 2012

come let us adore him, even still

My eyes filled with tears today when I went to pick up my girl from school. I was overcome with emotion imagining all of the parents in Connecticut who no longer have their kids to pick up. I was reading the "Inspired by Christ" logo on the marquee as I walked up the steps into B's school. The prayer of St. Francis was being read over the intercom:

Where there is hatred, let me sow love.

Where there is injury, pardon.

Where there is doubt, faith.

Where there is despair, hope.

Where there is darkness, light.

Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,

grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;

to be understood, as to understand;

to be loved, as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive.

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

These words seemed especially poignant today and they pierced my heart. I was praying that Brennan's heart would be touched by them and they wouldn't be some mindless ritual at the end of her school day. On Sunday our pastor shared a story of a scholar who was slated to write a publication, when suddenly his 30 year old daughter died of a pulmonary embolism. The publisher contacted the professor to explain that he was of course released from his obligation and they understood if he wanted out of his contract due to the circumstances. His response was "If I can't write about the resurrection of Jesus at a time like this, then I ought not to write about it at all." I gave an audible "Amen" as tears filled my eyes as I imagined that being my story. All I can say is I'm thankful that I know Jesus, without Him I would have no hope, with him, in spite of this world and my circumstance I have hope. I cling to the hope that he will do what he says he will do, he will make things right, he will come again to restore this brokenness and this mess of a world.

Yesterday I was in my car and the Christmas hymn "Oh come let us Adore Him" was on the radio, again my eyes filled with tears b/c in my sadness over the senseless loss of life this past week I was reminded that even in the midst of this, our hearts should be begging "let us adore you, Jesus, please let us come to you, give you the adoration that you deserve because you are good all the time, even when it hurts.

This past week was a hard week for a lot of reasons, I journeyed with a friend through many tears as she suffered a miscarriage, I sat and listened as another friend cried over her marriage ending. In this midst of all of this that surrounds each one of us, as we approach Jesus' birthday may we be reminded to "come and adore him" even still. In the midst of whatever is going on in your life, Jesus will meet you right where you are, he is good and worthy of praise. xo

December 7, 2012

Whew I'm glad this week is over! Lets see...where to start? Sorry for the blog lull my computer was at the shop due to a virus, boo. We FINALLY got our Christmas tree, better late than never! The tree guy tied our tree to the roof of our car, he put the sting through the car while we were in it. We quickly realized we were tied into the car! I was laughing so hard I had tears! It was quite the debacle, Brennan said if we got stuck in the car and couldn't get out we could eat each other and she would eat me first! Ha! Kids say the darnedest things, no?

This week has been kinda crazy but life is now starting to calm down after a couple months of crazy, I can't wait! I finally started cooking dinner again, after a bit of a hiatus I finally got to the store and got back in the kitchen! I tried this new pasta recipe and it was SO good and super easy. Adam has requested that it make a regular appearance and B even liked it! Score!

I haven't bought one Christmas gift yet so I've got some things to do this weekend but I'm looking forward to a relaxing couple days. And now, for sweet Suzannah, here is a pic of MY FACE taken by the oh so fabulous and talented Bonnie Berry.

Happy weekend, all! xo

December 2, 2012

It's been a good weekend, pretty busy but not so busy to where I don't feel rested or like I can't face tomorrow, so that's good! Today at church we had our advent activties, B made her ginger bread house. Poor thing, the house looked so cute and she (and I hehem) worked so hard on it and then we picked it up to take it home...and the roof collapsed and the whole thing fell apart. Sigh. I felt so sorry for her, told her we might try it at home later. We still haven't gotten our Christmas tree and I haven't busted out the decorations yet so needless to say, I definitely have my work cut out for me this week! I hope you all have a great Monday and week ahead! Head on over here to see a fun mini session! Here is a peek of an upcoming engagement session. More to come! xo

November 30, 2012

Annnnnd breathe. I feel like after a couple months of CRAZY things are finally starting to calm down. Every fall I find myself asking what I can do differently the next year that will make it this season a little more calm, not so hectic, etc. and I think I've realized that its just the way it is! My desire to slow down during my favorite time of year is really just not going to be a reality as long as I have the privilege of being a photographer. Working at Baylor clearly has been a large factor in this year being especially overwhelming but I am thankful for the opportunity. With that said, things are starting to calm down and today is my first Friday of many that I will now have off -WOOT! Since the first admission deadline has passed, things in my office are calming down a bit so I asked if it would be okay if I took Fridays off until things ramp up again and then said yes! I feel like a new woman, having 1 day to myself to get things done will make me feel SO MUCH BETTER, more organized, and hopefully I'll have more patience with my child...hehem. :) So, today feels like a new phase and I for one could not be more thrilled!

Speaking of progress here is an iphone photo of my new sink!! The back splash got taken out and of course, the ply wood is temporary until my counter tops can be put in (in about a week and a half or so). I'm thinking of doing a simple white tile back splash...any thoughts? Anyhoo, I think when its all said and done it will look great! I LOVE the sink/faucet, just hope when its all said and done it looks like the vision that's in my mind!

My gracious mother-in-law painted the living room/upstairs hallway. Its a creamy white but seriously, it doesn't look white!! And since I CLEARLY have painting issues just to prove I'm not crazy, when my mi casa kids were over the other day they asked me if it was a GREEN color!! NO JOKE! I've realized its not me, I'm not overly anal-crazy-paint color lady, its just the room and the light and what it does to wall color. BIG SIGH. I have no plans to change the paint at this point, that poor room has been painted so many times and I really at this point think the "perfect color" doesn't exist. Sigh. Unreal!!

Also on the ol' progress front I realized I haven't given a weight loss update in a long time! Well, its officially been 4 months and I've lost 14lbs. I'm halfway to my goal of 27lbs in total so I'm happy with that. Since the holidays I've pretty much just maintained versus loosing but I decided I was okay with that for now. I'll press on but I'm glad to be down 14 pounds and am enjoying that! I'm down a pant size and overall just feel better in my skin, which is nice. 13 to go!

Well, I have a looong to-do list that I've made for today so I'm gonna hop on it! (I literally couldn't fall asleep last night just thinking about all I wanted to get done today) :) Hooray for free Fridays! Have a good weekend, all!! xo

November 25, 2012

I feel behind on blogging! Happy (late) Thanksgiving, all! I hope you all had a great day filled with turkey and stuffing! Our Thanksgiving was not exactly one for the record books...I was in the hospital for most of it. On Tuesday afternoon I started not feeling well, the right side of my chest was hurting, it was radiating pain up to my neck and shoulder, and at times was hurting down my right arm. The pain was essentially chest pain, somewhat like a stabbing sensation that made it extremely painful to breath in. The pain waxed and waned for a while and on Wednesday night I was awake from 3-5am with shooting pain and Adam and I were debating whether we should go to the hospital right then. I really wanted to make Thanksgiving dinner and clearly, I had plans! I finally fell back to sleep for a couple hours but woke up still feeling terrible and definitely like something wasn't right. I pleaded with the Lord that if I could just get through dinner I would go to the hospital. While sitting at the table and starring at the food I made, nothing looked good enough to really enjoy b/c I was so uncomfortable. Adam, cousin Mike and I got up from the dinner table, got in the car and off to the hospital we went. The good news is the wait is pretty darn short when you mention you're having chest pain! Needless to say, after an EKG, blood work, urine work, chest x-ray, etc. they decided I needed to have a CT scan b/c some of my blood work came back abnormal, and it was the kind of not-normal that could mean I had a blood clot...scary. I had a CT scan, they injected dye into my heart and looked all around, from that they deduced I didn't have a blood clot (praise Jesus) but that I needed to have an ultrasound of my gallbladder since it appeared to have thickened walls and was contracted. After an ultrasound ruling out bad things in the gall bladder the doctors were somewhat perplexed but ultimately it looks like my diagnosis is Pleurisy. Essentially the lining of my lung is inflamed and there is no known cause, which apparently isn't that uncommon b/c since this has all come about I've talked to several folks who have had relatives who had it! Needless to say, these past several days have been extremely painful but the doc gave me some hard corn pain meds to help me sleep and apparently numbing the pain until it decides to go away is pretty much all that can be done. NOW I have chest pain just thinking about the hospital bill that's going to be coming my way!! Between that and the unexpected counter top bill I'm sure I'm in for it! Yikes! Clearly, I'm just thankful to be well and not to have anything too serious going on. I'm still not 100% but am feeling much better today. Big exhale. That is what has been going on around here. Doug and Kemi leave tomorrow (and I have a 6 year old that I'm sure will be inconsolable) but it was so nice to have them! Doug is taking out my back splash right now and getting the counter tops loosened so they can be lifted off easily when the corian is going to be installed. Kemi is done painting, we just have some parts at the very high part of the ceiling we gotta get to and then that will be done! They've been busy bees but we've also had lots of time to play! Yesterday we drove all the way to Austin b/c it was the only place we could find a bar that was showing the Duck game! Thankfully the ducks and the Baylor bears won so it was a good day in the Winn household! I'm looking forward to life getting back to normal here in the next week, it feels like its been a bit of a zoo around here! More to come! xo

I feel like a broken record

I feel like I keep saying the same thing over and over again, we're busy, we're running around like crazy people, no time to breathe, etc. This weekend was no exception, literally running from one thing to the next. To had more crazy to it all my sweet father-in-law has been installing my new sink (YAY!!) and my sweet mother-in-law has been painting my living room (yes I just painted it a year ago, and yes, my mother-in-law paited it before that!)! Needless to say the house is in a bit of disarray and Adam has been out of town for 5 days at a conference to boot! I know its a hectic time for everyone, everyone is busy and its just this season and I'm no different from anyone else but I am w.i.p.e.d. o.u.t. Sorry if I sound like a broken record. I could bore you all to tears with my counter top drama but the nutshell version is:

I wasn't planning on replacing them, but when we took out the old sink and put in the new sink...big ol' gap from where the old sink used to be all the way to the back splash (new sink isn't as deep). This wasn't a newsflash, we knew it would be an issue but I was hopeful we could match the granite and just replace that one such luck. Needless to say in the couple of scattered hours I've had free this week I've been running around town getting bids/quotes, looking at different counter top options, etc.. Ay yi yi! After ALL the back and forth I FINALLY made a decision, corian it is! I am super excited for it to be installed, I think it will look really pretty and be functional (double bonus) when its done! The install folks are super busy right now so I have temporary plywood counter tops for the next month! Fun. :)

Its almost wrong how much I love my new sink, its an object, I get it, but I LOVE MY NEW SINK!!! After drooling over farm sinks for 10 years I still am pinching myself that I actually have one! Its hard to appreciate it to its fullest surrounded by plywood but just wait...its going to be FAB. :)

I'm sure you're all thinking with all this talk about a sink and counter tops I really need to get out're probably right. Anyhoo, I have mounds of photo editing starring me in the face, gotta jet. More to come! For now, I'll leave you with a sneak peek of an adorable fam! xo

B's Puppy Party

Brennan told me ages ago she wanted a puppy party so that's what she had! The girls first picked up their puppies from the pound, then they took them to the adoption center where they weighed, measured and named them, then they made them collars and decorated their pet carriers! It was a busy day! Here are some of my favorites from my girl's 6th birthday party. xo
