bathroom update

A while ago I painted Brennan's bathroom but haven't shown photos yet. I finally got around to taking some this week so I thought I'd share the update. When we bought our 100 year old house it had just been "re-done." The seller owned our house for just a couple months as he bought it as a flip. It was great b/c the bathrooms and the kitchen and all been updated so there wasn't much that needed to be done. Really nothing needed to be done but I wanted to make the house my own and wanted to change things here and there. I thought the bathroom looked nice as it was but it looked very masculine to me with the black vanity and dark green paint. Not very feminine for a little girl so the main thing it needed was to be painted. As much as I've agonized over paint colors in this house, I actually only bought a handful of paint colors before deciding. The color I chose was called Pussywillow by Sherwin Williams. I think this light gray is a true gray and that you don't see blue (which is important to me as I'm not at all a blue person). I hung a couple things on the walls and put up a girly shower curtain (from Anthropologie). That's all I've done in here. The 2 things left to do are to get a new light fixture (I hate the one in there right now, looks like planets hanging down) and I still need to get a custom roman shade made. I'm looking for a chandelier to go in here, one that isn't too big, not too small, has nickel finishes rather than brass/gold, not too too feminine but also sweet. That's a long list of criteria! So far I haven't found one that I like enough to take the plunge. Anyhoo, enough chatter, here are the before/after photos.

(as usual I forgot to take real "before" photos, these photos were taken when we bought our house)

(I think its hard to tell a paint color from photos, I think in these pics the paint looks blueish but really, in person, its a true light gray)

a wall in B's room

There was this blank wall in B's room for over a year. I'm pretty darn type A so this has been an issue for a couple of reasons:

#1 it drove me crazy to have nothing up there for so long but

#2 I'm SO darn particular that unless something is "perfect" or really strikes me, the spot will stay empty until I find just that perfect something to fill it

B has been telling me for over a year that her room needs more pictures, so finally, FINALLY the blank spot has been filled.

Donuts with Dad...er Mom

Its been on the calendar for ohhh, a good month now. This morning was "donuts with dad" at Brennan's school. As you can imagine the kids are super excited to have dad there and had made a special gift for them, etc.. Adam has taken B to school every day, literally, I haven't taken her once this year. This morning of all mornings Adam had to catch a flight to Kansas City at 6am (we just found out the flight time a couple days ago and it couldn't be helped), so yeah, B was the only one in her class who didn't have her dad there. Sad day!! I asked her if she wanted to skip it and she said no, she wanted me to go instead. So, there I was, the only mom and I felt like all the dads were looking at me and B like "so sad, poor girl must not have a dad" or something like that. Of course Adam felt terrible to miss it, he took her on a special date yesterday to try and help make up for it. Oh, and here's another kicker, since I gave up desserts for Lent I couldn't even eat a donut for petesake!

Here's something that was waiting on the table for the dads when they arrived:

COME HOME QUICKLY DADDY!!! We miss you already! xo

Lent

Today Lent begins, its the 40 days until Easter. The purpose behind Lent for a Christian is to use this time as a time of prayer, repentance, and self-denial in preparation for Easter Sunday and celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. Between you and me I've never been very good at "giving things up" for Lent. To be honest I never think too much about it until its already here and then I think "maybe I should give something up" and then I don't. This year is different, this year I've been anticipating today and gearing up to GIVE UP DESSERT! Aghhhhhhhhh!!! Anyone who knows me at all knows I have a ridiculously large sweet tooth. I crave sweets, I get excited for dessert, I pour over recipes and think about what indulgent thing I want to try, etc.. I absolutely love dessert and the thought of not having it for 40 days seems just plain painful to me! I'm sure to many of you that might seem like a ridiculous "sacrifice" but to me, its a huge sacrifice and I know it will be hard. I wanted to give up something that would "hurt" a little, that I would actually count as a sacrifice and so, dessert it is! If I seem crabby on the ol' blog for the next 40 days, I'm sure it will be my sugar withdrawal taking over! :) Seriously though, I really am looking forward to this time of sacrifice in anticipation of celebrating the rising of my Savior on Easter morning. Our mi casa is going to be observing Lent for a portion of our gatherings for the next 40 days, I'm hoping it will be a sweet, reflective time and that we all grow from it in a new way this year. (speaking of mi casa, last night several of the mi casas that meet on Tuesday met at church and we all ate pancakes together to take part in fat Tuesday - so fun!). So anyway, happy Ash Wednesday everyone, thanks for reading! xo

not even sure what to title this post

I'm having one of those days were my mind feels all over the road. I feel like I could write a novel and say practically nothing. I have a lot of thoughts and really nothing to say all at the same time...does that make sense? I feel like its kind of been a weird year for me so far. Not too much going on but somewhat busy at the same time. I feel like a rambling paradox already. You know how when you're sitting in church and the pastor says something like "I had a sermon all prepared but then I felt like I should talk about something else so I'm somewhat flying by the seat of my pants here." (Which I always interpret as code for "this is going to be a long, rambling sermon that sounds totally unprepared." {I don't think I've been wrong yet on that count by the way}). :) So lest I do that I think I'll just say that if you think of me send some prayers my way, for direction, clarity, inspiration, hope, and a good attitude to boot! :) Here is a peek of a FUN family with much more to come! xo

V-Day re-cap

Yesterday was nice. B and Adam made me valentines, B and I shared a red velvet cupcake, B got a special rose just from daddy, Ad and I were able to go to a movie, I baked a yummy chocolatey dessert, and we just had a fun day of celebrating love. I snapped some pics of my girl, haven't had a chance to look at them yet so know that more is to come. Hope you all felt a little more loved yesterday. xo

pot roast & a senior

Last night we had a friend from Oregon spend the night while he was in Texas for a business trip. His wife is an excellent cook so I thought I'd better make a yummy dinner! I tried a new pot roast recipe and it was delish! My 2 cents on the recipe are that I would add the veggies an hour and a half before the roast is done versus the hour the recipe suggests (or maybe just the mushrooms) b/c they weren't quite done enough after only a hour. I didn't use parsnips, I just added more mushrooms, celery, and carrots instead. I forgot to put the fresh parsley on top at the end (even though I did buy it, shoot!), I doubt it would have made a big difference but might have looked nice? Anyhoo, here is the recipe for wine marinated pot roast! I also made one of my favorite go-to desserts but I'll share that recipe another time when I want to hunt down the link (I use it from a cook book).

On a un-related food note, if you want to check out more of this beauty head on over here. Have a great weekend, everyone! xo

exhaustion and unicorn poop

I got back from Seattle late last night. Here is how my past 24 hours went down:

*leave University Place at 9am

*get to Sea-Tac airport around 10am

*fly to Houston, TX around noon

*fly to Austin, TX around 7:16pm

*take shuttle from the Austin airport to long term parking from 8:30pm-8:45pm

*drive from Austin, TX to Waco, TX from 8:45pm-10:30pm

*show up at my friend Holly's house to pick up an empty kleenex box b/c it hits me on my drive that Brennan needs it for school in the morning (Holly had a cold and told me she had an empty box I could use) :)

*10:35pm arrive home

*11:40pm go to bed

*3:00am wake up to a little girl who had a bed wetting accident

*7:30am wake up and get B ready for school

Which brings me to 9am right now and I'm e.x.h.a.u.s.t.e.d. BUT I have a heart overflowing with gratefulness. I was able to watch one of my oldest and dearest friends get married, I was able to photograph a dear friend (and her adorable family) who I hadn't seen in years, I got to spend some time with my parents who I don't see enough, I came home to my loving husband and my baby girl who told me this morning "this is the best day EVER!" and when I asked her why, she said "because you are home!!!" That right there warms the ol' heart cockles and makes all the craziness of the past 24 hours totally worth it. I hope you all are having a lovely start to your week, photos to come. Oh, and b/c my friend emailed me this link and I thought it was hysterical, here are unicorn poop cookies! If only I'd known about these sooner and could have incorporated it into B's unicorn party!! xo

grown up mac n' cheese, my mi casa & a peek!

Last night I made Ina's grown up mac n' cheese, I'm not gonna lie, it was pretty darn fantastic. Adam said it was the best mac n' cheese he's ever had. The best mac n' cheese I've ever had is from a restaurant in Portland called Mothers, but this was a runner up I'd say. So, if you want to make some killer comfort food I'd give it a whirl! Here are my 2 cents: it says it makes 2 servings, I say it makes 4, but next time I would make it in smaller gratin dishes and have it as a side rather than a main course like we did last night (its pretty darn rich). Also, it is worth it to do the extra step of blending the fresh bread with the basil to put on top rather than using panko or something like that (which I considered doing to save time but I'm so glad I didn't!). Also, mine only need to bake for like 20 minutes versus the 30-40 the recipe suggests.

**switching gears**

Every Tuesday night we have our mi casa gathering at our house, I really love it. This semester is different from the last 2 semesters. A lot of folks can't make it due to evening classes, work schedules, studying abroad, etc.. We are just a smaller group which changes the dynamic...as much as I wish everyone could come every week and have my big ol' family of 20ish here I kinda like the change for a bit. We aren't doing dinner, rather I just make a dessert each week (last night it was chocolate chip cookies) and we can almost all fit around the couch and we talk about life, play a game, etc.. It's just a sweet change for a season and I'm really enjoying it. Next week we're meeting for dinner at a Mexican restaurant to say farewell to one of our darlings who is studying in Argentina for the term, that will be bittersweet. Its so weird but each of these college students feel like my own and its hard watching them grow up before my eyes! I swear just yesterday they were all timid freshman and now they are confident sophomores close to being juniors!! WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. I keep telling Adam they are going to leave me soon and its not okay!! Maybe we can convert the guest room into a bunk bed haven and they can all stay forever? :) Surely their parents won't mind......

Here's a peek of a lovely senior, more to come! xo
